100/10 would recommend! We have a big gap in ages with our children and the last time we used a nanny I did all of the taxes myself... I was thrilled to find Poppins Payroll! It is very affordable, super easy to use, and allows me to spend my limited time at home with my kids instead of fussing with an excel.
We're relatively new to Poppins, as well as having a nanny, but PP employee Alex Reuter has made our lives so much easier. It's also been insanely easy to reach a human at Poppins when necessary and everyone has been incredibly kind.
Poppins Payroll has been an amazing service for us through the 5 years we've used a nanny for our little ones. It's super easy to update nanny hours each week, and I never had to think about the taxes. Poppins Payroll took care of everything and was so reliable. Definitely recommend this service!!
Nanny taxes refer to the federal and state tax obligations that families are responsible for when they hire a household employee, such as a nanny or caregiver. They include taxes withheld by the employer, and taxes withheld from the employee. For more details, read the requirements outlined in IRS Publication 926.
If you pay your nanny more than $2,800 a year or $1,000 in a quarter, you're obligated to pay Social Security, Medicare, and federal unemployment taxes. You'll also have to pay certain state taxes, like state unemployment, and potentially local taxes depending on where you live. It might sound complicated, but Poppins Payroll handles all these calculations for you.
According to the IRS, if you're the one setting your nanny's work hours, location, and responsibilities, then they're most likely a household employee, not an independent contractor. This means you have certain tax and legal obligations. Don't worry though, we specialize in household payroll, so we've got you covered!
Absolutely. Paying legally gives your nanny important benefits like Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment insurance. It can also help them build credit. Plus, who knows when you'll need to be vetted for a high-profile position? It's always best to avoid any potential problems and do things by the book.
You'll need to get a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN), which is like a social security number for your "business" as an employer. You'll also need to report your new hire to the state, and register with your state's department of labor. Lastly, you'll need to submit forms like the W-2 and Schedule H at the end of the year, but with Poppins Payroll we do all the work for you.
All of it! Right after you signup, Poppins will get you a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN), set up your state and local accounts, and send in your new hire reporting. You manage the amount of your payroll through your personalized dashboard on our website. You can pay weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, and monthly (unless your state requirements limit the frequency). We can handle the payment for you by direct deposit or you can write the check (or electronic transfer) yourself.
At the end of every quarter, we’ll collect the state and federal taxes from you and submit them along with all the required reports. Finally, at the end of the year, we’ll prepare a Schedule H for you, which you attach to your personal income tax return to report your employer taxes, and a W-2 for your employee. Whew! That’s a lot for just $49 a month!
